Carrying on with our tradition of proactive participation in the community, Mobilink has taken another leap in gaining recognition in the most prestigious platform of the United Nations Global Compact initiative by acquiring its membership. This will give us an unprecedented opportunity to further our business and corporate responsibility objectives, while contributing to the momentum and strength of the Global Compact.
The Global Compact is a framework for businesses that are committed to aligning their operations and strategies with ten universally accepted principles in the areas of human rights, labor, the environment and anti-corruption. As the world's largest, global corporate citizenship initiative, the Global Compact is primarily concerned with exhibiting and building the social legitimacy of business and markets.
The UN Global Compact presents a unique platform for participants to advance their commitments to sustainability and corporate citizenship. With more than 5, 000 company participants and stakeholders from more than 120 countries, over 60 networks in developed and emerging economies, and a spectrum of learning, dialogue and partnership modalities, companies are provided with an opportunity to learn and share vigorously on various platforms.
By signing up to the initiative, Mobilink commits to upholding its ten principles and to regularly report on its progress through the publication of its communication of progress (COP).
The Ten Principles
Human Rights
- Principle 1: Businesses should support and respect the protection of internationally proclaimed human rights (including the right to an education, to healthcare etc…) ; and
- Principle 2: make sure that they are not complicit in human rights abuses.
Labour Standards
- Principle 3: Businesses should uphold the freedom of association and the effective recognition of the right to collective bargaining;
- Principle 4: the elimination of all forms of forced and compulsory labour;
- Principle 5: the effective abolition of child labour; and
- Principle 6: the elimination of discrimination (such as race, colour, sex, religion, political opinion, national extraction or social origin) in respect of employment and occupation.
Environment
- Principle 7: Businesses should support a precautionary approach to environmental challenges.
- Principle 8: undertake initiatives to promote greater environmental responsibility; and
- Principle 9: encourage the development and diffusion of environmentally friendly technologies.
Anti-Corruption
- Principle 10: Businesses should work against corruption in all its forms, including extortion and bribery.
Mobilink already upholds these 10 principles. By becoming a member organization of this initiative, Mobilink will now work towards promoting the ten principles in a more comprehensive manner as an organization. For example we will further uphold Principle 1 by providing a safe and healthy working environment for employees as well as providing comprehensive access to healthcare to all employees, including support staff.
We are also proud to state that Mobilink is the only telecom operator representing Pakistan on United Nation’s Global Compact platform.
