Pakistan’s high poverty level, low literacy and lack of proper sanitation and availability of clean water still continue to be the key factors to the low health condition of the people. In 1994, the Program for Family Planning and Primary Health Care was launched through the Ministry of Health with the aim of providing primary healthcare at the community level.

In order to address this problem, Mobilink has initiated a pilot project in collaboration with the Ministry of Health, United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), and the GSMA Development Fund to test two possible communication solutions for the timely referral of patients. These are low cost mobile phones bundled with a Jazz Sim and the Mobilink PCO which will also provide a secondary income generation opportunity for the lady health worker. The pilot will run in Chakwal and Muzaffargarh districts in rural Punjab.

Mobilink believes investments in the health status of the local communities will be a contributing factor in poverty reduction in Pakistan. It is with this aim that this pilot project has been initiated.

Project Updates
February 2008

It is a matter of great pride for Mobilink as well as Pakistan that the Lady Health Worker pilot project received special attention at the 3GSM World Congress held in Barcelona, Spain.

Mobilink, Pakistan and Idea Cellular, India were the only two GSMA Development Fund partner operators invited to a media roundtable. The roundtable allowed President and CEO, Zouhair A. Khaliq to interact with international reporters and discuss the project. Also speaking at the event,  Dawn Haig-Thomas, GSMA development fund director said, “The criteria for the projects - 19 in 11 countries over two years - is not just on improving lives but also does it make sense for operators. We believe doing good is good business."
