Cancer Awareness for employees
Karachi : May 27, 2008 - Mobilink, the country’s market leader in cellular
communication services with more than 31 million customers and part of
Orascom Telecom recently organized a special breast cancer awareness program
the Pink Ribbon Campaign for its women employees, with the aim of making breast cancer the foremost health concern in Pakistan.
The company arranged the awareness program with the support of National
Breast Cancer Awareness Campaign Pakistan for female employees to highlight the consequences of cancer and to create awareness of the advantages of its early
detection; according to a survey, 85,000 cases of breast cancer are diagnosed
yearly and 40,000 deaths are accounted in the same year. Dr. Maryem Manzoor
from the Pink Ribbon Campaign was present to answer queries from participants
at the seminar.
During the seminar, women were briefed about the challenges and lack of
medical facilities that posed as a hurdle in adequately addressing this national
health issue. It was also highlighted that early diagnosis could lead to prevention
and simple awareness through self-diagnosis procedures could save lives.
Nida Asher Khan, HR Operations Manager, Mobilink while attending the
awareness program stated, “It was an excellent learning program for all the
women employees of Mobilink to understand their vulnerability to this serious disease. It is our social responsibility to educate women on its implications and
early detection methods. I am sure the knowledge they acquired will be shared
with other women, which in turn will help women beat breast cancer issues in
The seminar included special sessions where women were explained the
symptoms and risk factors associated with cancer; they were advised to practice
self-examined for early detection which could lead to cure of this disease. Cancer
is curable if detected early and can save women from social and family stigmas
such as isolation and psychological setbacks. Mobilink takes its corporate social
responsibility very seriously and continues to initiate different campaigns and
projects for the benefit of its employees and the community.
